Boat Owners’ Workshop

During this winter, a small working group has been crafting a plan to transform the lower space of the West Shed into a workshop for boat owners. The space was emptied in the fall, and in the spring work parties, we hope to make the space usable. The purpose of the workshop is to provide boat owners with a dedicated space for minor repairs and projects as needed.

The working group is currently investigating what modifications and equipment are possible for the workshop, taking into account personal and fire safety. Primarily, the workshop will offer the opportunity for woodworking with basic tools, but there is also an exploration into the possibility of facilitating some degree of metalwork on the island. However, metalwork requires considerably more consideration for fire and personal safety, so due to the project’s low threshold, it is still uncertain.

The workshop will be a temporary solution with the larger development project for Liuskasaari in mind. Therefore, substantial investments will not be made in the workshop at this stage; it will be constructed lightly, considering technical and structural constraints. The goal is to offer boat owners their own workshop with the current resources and available space, something that the island has not had until now.

The working group has also taken on the task of surveying possible donations from members for the workshop’s equipment. The survey has already begun and will continue throughout the spring. In the same context, boat owners will be asked for their opinions on what equipment would be necessary and ideal for the workshop. However, the purpose of this survey is not to ensure that every desired item is implemented but also serves future needs, as mentioned earlier.

Once the workshop is hopefully made available as soon as possible next season, its development will continue alongside its use. The intention is to gradually equip the space based on how boat owners make use of it. The workshop will be the responsibility of its users, and it is in everyone’s interest and shared obligation to maintain its cleanliness and safety. Clear guidelines and common rules will be established for the maintenance and safety of the space.
