At Helsingfors Segelsällskap we feel strongly for sharing the passion for sailing
It has long been our pleasure to welcome members of other like minded clubs into our house, and our privilege to enjoy their hospitality in turn. HSS Board is happy to establish a network of formal reciprocal arrangements with the most agreeable and dynamic yacht clubs abroad.
We are open to suggestions from “matching couples” of yacht clubs with a focus on youth sailing & training, high class competitive sailing, referee exchange, classic fleets, ocean & archipelago cruising and Corinthian sailing.
HSS is one of the most distinguished yacht clubs in Finland. It was founded well over 100 years ago, in 1893 and have about 1200 members. Our members represent a wide scale of the population of the Helsinki sailing society with a distinguished fleet of sailing boats from various dinghies to beautiful classic 6 and 8mR’s and modern long-distance cruisers.
HSS is located on it´s own club island with a sheltered natural harbor at the southernmost tip of the Helsinki downtown. The island is reached in five minutes by our ferry, at a short walking distance from the City Center. Helsinki airport is reached by taxi within 30-40 minutes with flights all over the world on a daily basis.
Today HSS Yacht Club is
- one of Finland’s leading junior yacht clubs with over 100 sailing juniors.
- HSS hosts Finland’s most extensive sailing school for adults
- the largest fleets of classic yachts in the Nordics with over 80 wooden classic boats in the harbor
- For sailor guests there is a guest harbor with full service for twenty boats.

HSS Board 2023 - Julia Koivula, Sailing and Windsurfing Center
My passion for sailing began at an HSS beginners’ course in August 2021. Since then, I’ve become familiar with Sailing Center’s Laser16, Elliott 6 and J70 fleet, but also delightfully many club-members – and their boats. I’m especially happy and proud that I’ve already gotten to participate in the renowned offshore race Gotland Runt, where we managed to win the Swan Classic-class with s/y Antama.
My love for the sea and fascination with both inshore- and offshore-racing has also lead to an interest in the club and its affairs. On the board my task is to represent Sailing & Windsurfing Center. SWC is a multicultural, social and active group of sailors of varying levels. I want to make sure SWC and the club can offer inspiring and exceptional activities, in an environment where everyone can feel at home and advance in the sport in their own way – where a sense of belonging and community are important.
Outside sailing I’ve studied philosophy and film studies in the UK and Denmark, and am currently working in the fintech industry. During the summer you can usually find me on Liuskasaari, but you’re also welcome to contact me at jikoivula@gmail.com
