Zoé – the club’s own Hai boat

HSS owns Zoé, a Hai boat received as a donation in 2023. Zoé will be used to get club members acquainted with the sweet art of sailing classic wooden boats, including their maintenance and history. The club’s objective is to inspire as many sailors as possible sailing Zoé to eventually purchase their own wooden sailboats.

This wooden beauty is equipped with a fixed electrical engine facilitating harbor maneuverers and sailing in swallow and narrow waters.  The boat’s cabin has mattresses, and the cockpit can be covered by a boom tent making overnighting easy and comfortable.

Zoé is available for racing also, but due to the fixed propellor and other cruising equipment, she competes rather poorly against the rest of the fleet and a modest bottom-half position is to be expected.

How do I get to sail Zoé?

Zoé can be sailed by club members selected to a stand-alone Hai posse being also in charge of maintaining and fixing Zoé under the guidance of seasoned sailors of wooden classics.

The first Hai posse, comprising up to 10 members, is selected for the sailing season 2024 based on applications.

Each group member shares custody and responsibilities for the boat on equal terms. The members of Hai posse together will determine the rules regarding the usage, maintenance, boat reporting, fixing, budget control and purchases.

The Hai posse shall aim to organize try-out days for club members on a monthly basis.

How do I apply to the Hai posse?

All HSS members and also non-members committing to join if selected are eligible to apply to the Hai posse. Get acquainted with the terms below and apply to the Hai posse by 31 January 2024 by using this application form through the Suomi Sport -service.

The Hai posse is selected annually for each upcoming sailing season. In order to secure the continuation of the project and a handover of know-how to new members, a membership can be extended to additional seasons as decided by the Classic Yacht Committee.

HSS Classic Yacht Committee selects the members of the Hai posse by considering the following aspects, among others:

  • The Hai posse is suitable for persons who master at least the basics of independent sailing.
  • An applicant’s particular enthusiasm for wooden boats, their maintenance and history is appreciated.
  • To have Zoé under sail as much as possible during the upcoming season, Classic Yacht Committee seeks active individuals who want to get nautical miles under their belts.
  • The applicants are encouraged to elaborate on the following: what is your sailing background and have you completed any exams (e.g. inshore navigation exam, boat captain exam, VHF exam).
  • How do wish spend time sailing; what are your hopes and aspirations; are you applying by yourself or by as a group with others?
  • The goal is that at least a part of the Hai posse would continue after the first season by running the project and by recruiting new members.

Our club uses the Suomi Sport service for the management of everyday activities. Through the Sport account, you can:

  2. Manage your membership: The Suomisport account enables the management of membership not only in HSS but also in different clubs. It facilitates the updating and maintenance of member information.
  3. Security and privacy: By creating an account, you can manage your security settings and ensure your privacy within the Suomi Sport service.

Creating a Suomi Sport account requires providing your personal identification number for the following reasons:

The club does not have access to your personal identification number. It is solely used by Suomi Sport to identify you and ensure that each user has only one Suomi Sport account.

What does it cost to sail Zoé and what is included?

Season fee per person is EUR 600, which is in addition to the annual club membership fee, as applicable (See membership categories and fees).

New club members elected to the Hai posse are exempt from the club initiation fee.

The season fee includes:

  • Approx. 120 sailing days to be shared among the Hai posse.
  • Lessons in boat maintenance to be held in March to April 2024 in or near Helsinki.
  • Berthing at HSS.
  • Insurance for the boat.
  • Winter storage at HSS.
  • Maintenance tools.
  • Continuous guidance.
  • Opportunity to participate in classics’ events.
  • Introduction to the history of the boat and the club.
  • Access to being part of the classics’ community.

Being a member of the Hai posse provides you with great know-how and skills for sailing independently and for maintaining and buying your own boat. Posse members will get to learn Zoé as a wooden boat as well as the critical aspects to be paid attention to when buying your own boat and exploring boats on market.

What does it mean to maintain Zoé?

Each user of Zoé shall be responsible for her maintenance consisting of the following:

  • Planning and scheduling of maintenance.
  • Spring maintenance.
  • Refit of fittings and hardware in accordance with a fall 2023 plan.
  • Regular care and fixing during the sailing season.
  • Fall maintenance.
  • Documentation of maintenance

The boat is in excellent condition, but the fittings and hardware will be improved in connection with the regular spring and fall maintenance.

Boat insurance and responsibility for Zoé

Zoé is in joint custody as property of the HSS.

HSS has taken out a property and third-party liability insurance for Zoé with a deductible of EUR 200.

In case of any damage to the boat, the general principle shall be that the person causing the damage shall fix and/or pay for the damage. Any damage, however, caused to the boat while using her by the club, shall be covered by the club itself.

The boat shall be left in the same condition as it was prior to sailing.

Minor problems shall be dealt with immediately after sailing without unnecessary delay.

As general rule, the skipper of the boat shall be responsible for safety and any damage while sailing.

Examples on liability in connection with damages:

  • The tiller extension was stepped on and was broken while cruising the boat. Since the replacement of the tiller extension is easy and its costs is less than the insurance deductible (EUR 200), the skipper of the boat pays for a spare part and takes care of the installing without further formalities.
  • The boat was damaged while berthing, and services of a marine carpenter are needed to fix the boat. The insurance will pay for the costs while the skipper pays the deductible and arranges for the fixing.
  • The boom breaks in two while sailing the boat under the influence of alcohol, and the insurance company refuses to pay. All participating sailors will cover the damage in full by either fixing the boom to its prior condition by themselves or by using a professional.
  • The boat is damaged while using it for the club’s try-out day. The club shall be responsible for the damages, the not the volunteering individuals. The volunteering skippers shall, however, take care of the arrangements to have the boat fixed.

Others tasks

Zoé users

  • will produce content of Zoé’s adventures to the club’s newsletter and other media channels (approx. 5 stories per season)
  • prepare the Zoé budget for the season 2025
  • run the application process for season 2025 in cooperation with the Classic Yacht Committee.
