Helsingfors Segelsällskap r.f. (HSS) is looking for a harbourmaster! This position is a unique opportunity to work in versatile and practical tasks in the most beautiful surroundings of Helsinki, in the middle of the sea and the city.
The harbour master coordinates the maintenance and preparation of boats, harbour and facilities in cooperation with external operators, and carries out maintenance work himself. HSS is a sailing club founded in 1893. The club operates on three islands, Liuskasaari in central Helsinki, Andö in the Inko archipelago and Getören in the Sipoo archipelago. Liuskasaari has about 250 berths in seven moorings and three properties owned by the club. The club has around 1100 members, representing sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts of all ages, from juniors to pensioners. The club offers a wide range of opportunities to practise and compete in these sports. The club has a guest marina with 12 berths at the Shale Island.
The club has businesses as tenants, two restaurants and a petrol station. A separate company operates a boat service to the island with equipment owned by the club.
The club owns nine RIB boats, two vessels providing liaison and wholesale services and two aluminium boats.
HSS is located in a great location in the centre of Helsinki in Kaivopuisto and the island has an island-like atmosphere. The club has a large and diverse team, consisting of a Development Manager, Head of the Adult Sailing School and Head Coaches for juniors and adults. There is also a nine-member board of directors and several committees made up of volunteers from the club.

Job description
Your days can include, for example:
- Maintenance of boats and docks, coordination and implementation of maintenance
- Coordination of wholesale logistics and mail with the club’s corporate tenants
- Managing the rental of premises in the morning, opening the doors for customers and bringing the catering to the premises
- Management of outsourced maintenance work and preparation and implementation of procurements; monitoring of budgets
- Maintaining the port’s tool and spare parts inventory
- Maintenance of buildings and equipment, such as fire extinguishers
- Management of permit issues
- Organisation and implementation of waste management
- Management of fleet reservations
- Management of the guest marina
The work is varied and changes daily. The job involves working closely with other staff and volunteers in the club.
What do we expect from you?
You are expected to have skills and competences in at least one of the following areas:
- Manual skills: basic skills for port and property maintenance
- Basic knowledge of technical systems: basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing and ventilation systems (professional level not required as some work can be outsourced)
- Boat driving skills: experience in driving a boat is essential
- Boat knowledge: outboard engine maintenance and understanding of basic boat systems (electrical, batteries, hull)
- Coordination and organisation skills: ability to manage projects and organise work tasks, budget management
- Co-operation and interaction skills: the role involves working closely with the club’s staff, members, marina clients and external parties.
- Initiative and responsibility: the role involves a lot of independent work and taking responsibility for projects
- Driving licence: needed for shopping and getting around
- IT skills: basic computer skills and knowledge of most common programmes

What do we offer you?
The contract is temporary and runs from the beginning of April until the end of October. The job is either full-time (normal working hours are Monday to Friday, mainly 8am to 4pm) or part-time. At times, the job will also include weekend and evening shifts, so flexibility is required on both sides. However, you will have the freedom to plan your schedule to suit your own responsibilities.
The workplace is mainly located in Liuskasaari, Helsinki, but administrative tasks can also be carried out remotely, offering more flexibility in terms of working hours and location. The job does not involve travelling, so all duties will be based locally.
The benefits of the job include access to a boat, occupational health care and flexible working hours. Although this is a fixed-term contract, it is possible to take two weeks’ summer holiday during the contract.
