Insurance

Members are insured with insurance from If Vahinkovakuutusyhtiö. The insurance is valid for all sailing activities and immediate travel to and from sailing-related trips in Finland, as well as temporarily for up to three months abroad under the same conditions as in Finland.

Additionally, the insurance covers sailing competitions or practices organized by the Finnish Sailing and Boating Federation, its member clubs or schools, and class associations, or during training sessions according to the coaching program, along with immediate travel related to these activities. You can read more about the insurance here (in finnish).

Sailors and surfers who own their own boat or board are responsible for insuring their equipment. The club’s equipment is insured by the club. When acquiring insurance, it’s advisable to consider whether it covers competition situations and land transport throughout Europe. Normal boat insurance typically does not cover these, but they are crucial for dinghy sailors or windsurfers, as they represent the highest risk areas. The insurance premium depends on the policyholder, the boats value, and age. Other considerations include the extent of liability insurance, whether it needs to be expanded beyond normal levels for property and asset damages. Alandia offers a good price-to-quality ratio for boat insurance.

Anyone participating in competitions should have third-party liability insurance, which is often required. Affordable third-party liability insurance can be obtained, for example, from Yacht Pool Finland. Typically, the Notice Of Race (NoR) for a competition specifies the required insurance amount, for instance: “Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance, with 250,000 € minimum coverage.” Third-party liability insurance must be obtained independently and is not included in club membership.
