The 9th Classic Yacht Symposium and Dinner February 29th 2020
Yachting enthusiasts from around the world are getting together in Helsinki on February the 29th. Our mission is to strengthen bonds between classic yacht sailors and to create a deeper understanding of the history, the present and the future opportunities of classic yachting. The symposium also is also a tribute to the contributions of the designers, builders, owners and sailors involved with classic yachts.
The symposium has featured several prominent yachtsmen from all over the world, among others Halsey Herreshoff, David Pedrick, Alex Thomson, Juan Kouyoumdjian, Heinz Ramm-Schmidt, Antti Herlin, Jussi Gullichsen, Henrik Andersin and John Lammerts van Bueren. The 9th Symposium is honouring the memory of the Symposium founder, Esko Kilpi, who’s chosen theme for 2020 is Joy and Beauty.

The Symposium starts at 12.00, chairman Samppa Vilkuna
– Samppa is a young but seasoned yacht racer and a classic yacht enthusiast.
“Me and My Metre Boats” – Pelle Petterson
– Pelle is a yachtsman, naval architect and an industrial designer. He is an Olympic bronze and silver medalist as well a world champion in the Starboat class. He also won World Cup medals in the Soling Class and participated in the America’s Cup. He has designed hundreds of racing and cruising yachts. He designed Volvo’s successful sports car, the P1800.
”The Story Behind the Maritime World of Robbe & Berking” – Oliver Berking
Oliver has founded the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre in Flensburg, the largest tribute to Classic Yacht history and sailing in Europe. Hi also owns the Robbe & Berking Boatyard and the Baum & König classic yacht brokerage.
“The Finnish-Spanish 6 metre Renaissance” – Violeta Alvarez
Violeta helms the Charles Nicholson designed 6 metre 1938 Erica and the latest (2017) 6 metre design by Juan K – Stella.
”Sailing on the Edge” – Silja Kanerva and Sinem Kurtbay
Silja is a 2012 Match Race Olympic bronze medalist. Sinem is a world class Nacra 17 sailor.
“You Can Save Almost Everything – The Story of Cambria” – John Lammerts van Bueren
Yachtsman, yacht historian and author of several books on classic yachts, CEO of Touchwood BV
“Joy and Beauty” – Donn Costanzo
Donn is a classic yacht builder and restorer. He has been instrumental in the development of the Oakcliff Sailing Centre in Oyster Bay. He is a native Long Islander who spent many years in Europe restoring some of the world’s finest classic yachts; Altair, Clio, Al ‘ Blanche, etc.
“Pecca Kucha – Design, Form, Function, Speed, Strength, Innovation and Endurance” with Teemu Kurkela, Ilkka Suppanen, Miikka Pennanen, Oskari Muhonen, Allan Savolainen and Ossi Paija
